Press Release – Naas Canal Festival – Oct 2010

PRESS RELEASE….IMMEDIATE….

HERITAGE BOATS TO VISIT NAAS

Over the October Bank Holiday weekend, October 23th to 25th, boats of the Heritage Boat Association together with boats of the Kildare Branch of the IWAI will visit Naas.

Amongst the fleet will be two of the Grand Canal Company boats (barges) which would have worked on the navigation 50 to 100 years ago carrying cargo to and from the Naas terminus to Dublin, Limerick, Waterford and many other towns along the route.

The event follows on from last year’s very successful visit by the joint fleets and a Spring visit to Edenderry harbour.

The boats will be on display in the harbour in Naas at the old Canal Stores where they used to dock with their cargos.

The Heritage Boat Association is especially interested in meeting anybody who had family or other connections with the Grand Canal Company or other boats who worked commercially on the system.

The Boats will move up the Branch Line on the Saturday morning and will be on display in the Harbour over the weekend. The restored Canal Boat number 107B will be open to visitors on Saturday and Sunday. All are welcome to come aboard.

There will be displays over the weekend by the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland, Waterways Ireland and the Heritage Boat Association.
