Fine Lines – Clear Water

Fine Lines – Clear Water is the second book published by the Heritage Boat Association documenting the floating heritage of Ireland’s inland waterways. It complements the earlier publication Cool Metal – Clear Water. It covers a range of historic craft found on the Irish waterways including Irish built working boats, Dutch & English barges, Flying Boat Tenders and a number of pleasure boats. It also contains a very useful index to both volumes (Cool Metal – 1st edition)

Carlow – through the waters of time

We have published this book to celebrate the visit of the Heritage Boats to Carlow and to promote an increased awareness of our spectacular waterway system. We believe that increased knowledge of the pleasures and benefits available from the system will lead to greater use. This in turn will help to ensure a high level of conservation and so ensure that future generations will also be able to enjoy the wide range of activities the waterway system provides.

Out of print – Online PDF available here.

Water Nymphs 2023 Charity Calendar

Water Nymphs 2023 showcases creative body paint artwork, women from the boating community, their boats and the beautiful waterways of Ireland. Our goal is to support and raise funds for the tireless work of the Irish Cancer Society.

‘A Big thank you to all involved in this amazing project! We did it! We raised 10,000 euro for the Irish Cancer Society!’

River Rats

The River Rats 2013 Charity Calendar is now available. It can be purchased online via the IWAI shop at shop.iwai.ie and will be available at HBA and IWAI events throughout the summer.

The concept of this calendar is to celebrate the men, their boats and the Waterways of Ireland. The models are members of the HBA and IWAI who have stepped up to the challenge of trying something they have never done before and have ventured outside their comfort zone, all in the name of charity.

Thanks to sponsorship from Yachtsman Euromarine, 100% of the money raised will be donated to the models’ chosen charity, Irish Cancer Society.

With all calendars now sold, we have raised in excess of €10,000!

A presentation of “the cheque” to the Irish Cancer Society will take place on: Saturday 18th May 2013 at 5pm

By kind permission of Waterways Ireland, the presentation will take place in the Waterways Ireland Visitor Centre at the Grand Canal Dock, Dublin.

School collaboration books

The HBA has collaborated with Primary school accross the inland navigation

In 2011 for ‘HBA10’ the 6th Class students of Saint Rynagh’s National School participated in a project centred round the Heritage Boats, their links with Banagher and incorporating the wider heritage and history of the Shannon River. The students, supported by the school principal Mr Fergal McMahon, class teacher Ms Catherine Dolan, local historian and teacher Mr James Scully and local historian Mr Jim Madden, explored the impact the River Shannon has had on the town and its hinterland over the centuries.

In March 2013 during the HBA’s Trip up the Royal canal 5th Class students of St Matthew’s National School, Ballymahon, Co. Longford produced a book on their connections to the Royal Canal.

Another in the series of HBA School Booklets was launched on Wednesday, 12th June. This latest booklet involved the 5th class boys from O’Connell Primary School in Dublin. A great effort by all involved and a lovely ceremony took place at “Edmund Rice House”, North Circular Road. This is the second booklet published in collaboration with a primary school on the Royal Canal route. After the Ballymahon, County Longford book, the HBA worked with O’Connell Primary School in Dublin. This booklet is the culmination of many weeks’ work; it explored the heritage and wildlife of the Royal Canal and included a field trip where the workings of a lock were explained to the pupils. Many thanks for the support from their Teachers, Ms. Boyle and Mr. Conlan and from the Principal Mr. O’Keefe.

A forth schoolbook was launched at the Shannon Harbour Rally 2013, this one in collaboration with Lumcloon National School. This is the fourth in a series which began in Banagher at our tenth anniversary celebrations in 2011. Another lovely and rewarding venture for all involved in what is a unique piece of work.

Book production was kindly supported by Waterways Ireland.
